LOW TESTOSTERONE CANNOT BE RELATED TO OLD AGE
It has been long believed that as men age, their testosterone levels drop. But is it directly related to the age of a person? A new study shows that this cannot be the case.
It is more probable that the levels of testosterone in a man decreases due to a deterioration in health rather than an increase in the past years on this earth. Unfortunately, the two tend to go hand in hand. Australian researchers have recently discovered that the amount of testosterone in the blood did not fall in older men who have optimal health, which was presented at the 2011 annual meeting of the Endocrine Society in Boston, Massachusetts.
Dr. David Handelsman, a professor of reproductive endocrinology and andrology at the University of Sydney said: “Our interpretation is that age itself does not reduce blood testosterone levels … but the accumulating disorders as men age, some preventable and some not, some genetic and environmental impact, although quite modest.”
This study took blood samples from 325 men over 40 years nine times over three months. All these men had a good health for their age and testosterone concentrations were unchanged.
While age had no effect on testosterone levels, obesity was associated with a smaller decrease, the scientists said. Dr. Ronald Swerdloff, chief of the division of endocrinology at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, noted that other studies have documented a greater drop in testosterone among older men and Handelsman investigation called “a puzzle piece.”
“Most people agree that acute and chronic diseases adversely affect blood testosterone levels, so it is not a surprise,” said Swerdloff. “But there are reductions that appear to be independent of comorbid conditions. The fact of the matter is that, with increasing age there is a decrease in testosterone levels, but the degree of decline differs from one study to another, and the variation may be due to many factors.”
Could it be that all these supplement companies trying to promote testosterone target men over for no reason? Maybe. But it is more likely that this is something that has just been discovered, and could provide men to stay healthy throughout their lives to make sure they can still offer women the seed of love.
** Because this study was presented at a medical meeting, the data and conclusions presented in this paper of low testosterone should be considered preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal.
