Kidney Swelling

KIDNEY SWELLING
It’s defined as hydronephrosis in the language of medicine. But it can also be described as the growth or expansion of urine collecting systems in kidney because of different reasons. This situation is caused by the accumulation of urine in kidney. Renal pelvis of the kidney (where urine is produced and stored) swells because of the accumulation of urine, that’s why it pressures the renal tissue and begins to disrupt its work. The reason of the swelling is occlusion of this channel. Hydronephrosis, caused by swelling, sometimes recovers.

In hydronephrosis depending on unilateral occlusion, as the other kidney continues to work the symptoms are noticed late. This adversely affects the course of the disease. Hazard rate is low. If both kidneys are affected by the blockage and if the urine goes in the opposite direction because of the occlusion, the result may cause distress. In case of kidney’s functional failure, there is no choice other than extracting the kidney.

SYMPTOMS

  • Back pain in kidney cavity,
  • Infection due to the accumulation of urine,
  • Fever,
  • Pain while urinating,
  • Swelling in the abdomen,
  • Nausea and vomiting,
  • Thirst in two-sided hydronephrosis,
  • Malaise,
  • Weight loss, are well-known symptoms.

DIAGNOSIS

  • Urography
  • MRI
  • Ultrasound
  • Cystoscopy
  • Complete urine test

WHAT IS THE CAUSE OF THE DISEASE?

All kinds of occlusion which may cause the urine, floating from the urinary bladder, reach into the kidneys or all kinds of occlusion which may interfere with going out of the urine from the bladder are among the reasons of the disease. Often it may occur as a result of obstruction of urinary tract by a urinary tract stone or a tumour.  In addition, the cases which complicate emptying the urinary tract like curling of the ureter, pregnancy, prostate hypertrophy causes to the formation of hydronephrosis disease.

TREATMENT

Early diagnosis of the disease would be useful. By means of early diagnosis, treatment can be ensured by eliminating blockages. Thus the patients can return to normal life.

But, in case of late diagnosis, it is not possible to say the same thing. Because in this case, the blockages has begun to drop permanent damage in kidney. Even if the blockages are removed, it may not possible for the patients to return to their normal life because of the damage. In such cases, if necessary, the damaged kidney can be taken by surgical intervention. We also recommend that every day a new medicine or drug treatment services are available.
